I can remember as a young girl being afraid when my mom would mention that it was time for bed. Not exactly sure why those words created such a negative response within me, but they did. I shared the room with my sisters, so it wasn’t because I was alone. As I sit and think about it today, it was because the lights were turned out and I was left in the dark. There was always a light in the hallway that lit our path to the bathroom, but our bedroom was left in darkness.
The darkness keeps us from seeing clearly enough to navigate our way through the places we must travel. If I had known then—what I know now perhaps my mother’s words would not have frightened me so much. As an adult now almost a half a century later, I still don’t care much for the darkness that we face in life, whether it be physical or not. As a Christian, I no longer fear physical darkness as I did when I was a child but have no desire to sit in darkness either.
See when darkness is present all we have to do is turn on the light. Hit the switch and the darkness disappears. The light enables us to see and move around safely and with much greater ease. If we cut the light of, and if there is no other light shining in that area, the darkness returns again. Light will always chase the darkness away.
Living a Christian life is not always easy from day to day, but regardless, we are Still Saved. It’s our responsibility to allow God’s Light to illuminate our way both naturally and spiritually. There will be times when we may not be able to navigate clearly through God’s planned path for our lives. Even as the darkness of this world is all around us, we can’t just stand still, no we must keep it moving. We must reach for “A Light in Darkness”. The Bible says, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and I light unto my path.” God’s Word is that light and we need His light daily.
If you’re struggling from time to time and don’t really know which way to go—it’s time to reach for God’s Word. It is “A Light in Darkness”. If you find yourself in a situation and you’re unable to see clearly through it—might I suggest to you again, reach for God’s Word—”A light in Darkness” and allow it to light-up the path you travel. Don’t be afraid. Remember when the light is shining—darkness will always be exposed. (Read Psalm 119:105 and John 8: 12 KJV)
