† Our Words Do Matter

Communication is an essential part of life.  Effective communication is even better.  It’s hard to communicate with someone who is unable to listen to your words.  Whether we’re angry, upset, excited, hyped-up, or not—our words do matter.  It doesn’t make sense to just say things that no one can understand or be inspired  by in some positive way.

The Bible says to be careful what you say and pay attention to who you’re saying it to.  What am I referring to?  In Ephesians 4:29, Paul reminds us to let no corrupt communication proceed out of our mouths.  In other words, when I open my mouth to speak, I need to make sure my words are wholesome, honest, moral, ethical, kind, and nurturing.   I should think about what I’m getting ready to say, before saying it.  The words coming out of my mouth should be designed to lift folk up—not tear them down. Paul continues by giving examples of the types of things we should be saying, especially if the overall goal is to be heard and not misunderstood.

Think on this…he’s saying we should speak the things that are good and can be used for edifying. Our words, when spoken, should be intended to minster grace and compassion to the hearer. Next time you have a deep or heartfelt conversation with someone, will you try to be kind and thoughtful or will you say what you want to say regardless of how it’s received or how it makes the person feel.  Will you pay close attention to the words you’re getting ready to say or will you just let them rip.    Our Words Do Matter—let’s choose them wisely. (Read Ephesians 4: 29-32)
